the pursuit of essentiality

No form is more essential than the sphere: a single surface, a single side. In his research, the essential nature of the energy of life led sculptor Andrea Roggi to elect the sphere as a symbol of the Energia della Vita. His works thus feature small, gilded globes, sometimes sculptures in their entirety, other times additions to Trees of Life, the series of bronze, more rarely marble or stainless-steel pieces that meticulously depict olive plants, from roots to leaves, placed to protect the Earth and the life it holds.

An extraordinary artwork emerged recently from Roggi’s meeting with Martin Katz, an American jeweler and goldsmith. Through his art, Katz completed a Tree of Life by crafting a small white gold sphere set with over two thousand gemstones, composing a globe of sapphires, diamonds, Paraíba tourmalines, and Tsavorite garnets. “Collaborating with a prestigious artist like Martin has been an enriching experience artistically and humanly,” comments Roggi. “The sphere is placed in the center of the roots and radiates light and energy, perfectly synthesizing two different artistic languages.”

The sculpture was unveiled and exhibited first in Florence, in the Salone dei Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio, and later in Venice in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. “Two remarkable places,” emphasized the artist. “And now we plan to take the artwork to Rome and later to the United States.”

Meanwhile, Andrea Roggi’s work continues in the new foundry built in his hometown of Castiglion Fiorentino, where the sculptor personally oversees all process stages. Starting at Easter, his majestic bronze Tree of Life – six meters in height – is on display at Forte dei Marmi’s Pontile, as well as other works of his which can be admired in several Italian cities during the summer months, from Matera to Amalfi and Mantua, and in Nice, France. And, of course, also in the gallery that the artist opened a few years ago in the historic center of Pietrasanta.
