for the future of beauty
In September, Forte dei Marmi is the place to be for the Design a Sustainable Future TEDx event devoted to sustainable lifestyles. To new technologies, environment, fashion, rights, at an event that will see independent thinkers, innovators, and dreamers alternating their visions of a future to share and to promote
To associate Forte dei Marmi, Versilia, the Tuscan coast with the image of a pinewood is the most natural thing in the world. The pines are a strong identifying feature of this territory. With their colors, their fragrance, their wild beauty that challenges the sky, they seem to have always been here. Fruit of unerring evolution that always puts the right thing in the right place.
Wrong. The marvelous pinewoods of Versilia, those forests shading entire residential neighborhoods in Forte and foraying into the very center of town, are recent arrivals, put there by the hand of man: an artificial environment.
It’s a shame that the results of man’s meddling are so rarely this magnificent. It’s usually the opposite. We must, then, question ourselves about what boundaries shouldn’t be crossed, what are the correct directions to take, what our alternatives are; and for Forte dei Marmi and for all those people who, like us, live here and love Forte, what balances ought we to strive for – in our private lives, at work, professionally, in the ways we plan and carry out all our daily activities – in order to preserve and hand down the beauty that has been placed in our care.
What balances ought we to strive for in order to preserve and hand down the beauty that has been placed in our care?
Sustainability – a topic as comprehensive as it is debated – will be at the center of the eagerly-awaited TEDxForteDeiMarmi Design a Sustainable Future event at the Augustus Beach Club on 1 September. This is the first TEDx gathering ever held in Versilia and the first ever in Italy to be held in a seaside venue. Participating in the non-profit conference-showcase will be notable figures from the worlds of science, culture, entertainment, and art – in line with the proven TED Talk formula of bringing different areas of interest into play to entertain, arouse curiosity, and promote the spread of information and make creative connections among the talks. “The energy generated at TEDx events is difficult to define, especially when the finest minds and excellences interact at extraordinary venues like Forte dei Marmi,” says Matteo Stefanini, neo-engineer who just earned his doctorate in Artificial Intelligence and a TEDx organizer working with a team of young volunteers.
Many topics are lined up along the transversal theme line of sustainability. “As far as the marine world goes, we’ll be talking about sustainable tourism, yachting, marine ecosystems and preservation of their biodiversity, and about solutions to the problem of nets abandoned at sea,” Stefanini continues, “like that put forward by three young Americans who have developed a method for transforming fishing nets into skateboards and eyewear, or in Italy, by the Sicilian startup that is making bags and rucksacks from nets no longer suitable for fishing. These are ideas worth spreading, ideas that foster faith in the future. We’ll be focusing heavily on fashion and the luxury goods and design sectors, discussing many of what have become today’s core issues, such as circularity in materials use, new, more sustainable fibers, and product traceability starting with the raw materials.”
